Google Business Profile Basics Most Businesses Skip

For many local businesses, the profile gets more attention than the website. These are the parts people leave undone.

Categories do more work than the description

Your primary category strongly influences which searches you appear for. Choose the most specific accurate option, then add secondary categories for the other things you genuinely do.

Photos are the most-viewed thing you own

Profiles with current, real photos get more engagement than profiles with a logo and nothing else. Refresh them seasonally, especially if your business looks different in summer than in winter.

Holiday and seasonal hours

Set special hours before the holiday. A customer who drives to a closed business rarely tells you why they stopped coming.

Watch for edits you did not make

Google and the public can both suggest changes to your listing. Check the profile periodically for altered hours, categories, or a phone number that is not yours.

Answer the questions

The Q&A section is public and anyone can answer. If you do not answer, someone else will — and they may be wrong.
